Roles and Strategies for Student Leaders

Welcome to the Marian Koshland Science Museum. Congratulations! You have been selected by your teacher to be a group leader during your field trip to the museum. You will help your teacher, the staff of the museum, and your classmates in this special role.
During the field trip your class will be divided into three groups. Your goal is to coach your group so that they complete their tasks in a timely manner. If you have questions about your role as a student leader, please ask your teacher or the field trip leader.
Here are some useful tips on being a good group leader:
During the information gathering in the museum’s exhibits
Your class will spend the first part of the field trip exploring the museum’s exhibits and gathering information needed to complete two worksheets. Your class will be divided into three expert groups, called the red group, blue group, and yellow group. Each expert group focuses on a different part of the exhibit. You will be the leader of one of these expert groups.
- Divide your expert group into small groups of two or three students.
- Assign each small group two or three questions to complete from each worksheet.
- When everyone has answered their questions, bring your whole expert group together to share answers and complete the worksheet.
During the expert group discussion
Your expert group will spend time completing the worksheets and deciding what information to share with the rest of the class.
- Work quickly to complete the worksheets. Spend most of your time deciding the points you want to share during the interdisciplinary group discussion.
- To encourage participation in your group have each member suggest an important point to share.
During the interdisciplinary group discussion
After the expert group discussion, your class will be reorganized into three new interdisciplinary groups, called group 1, group 2, and group 3. Each of the interdisciplinary groups contains members from the red, blue, and yellow groups. You will be a leader of an interdisciplinary group. Your interdisciplinary group will exchange information and think about the main discussion question.
- Have members from the red, yellow, and blue expert groups describe what they learned and share the main points from their expert group discussions. Each group should be given about 5 minutes to share their ideas.
- After each expert group has shared information, your interdisciplinary group should discuss possible answers to the main discussion question.
